THE THIRD COMMANDMENT

By Nick Bibile

You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.” (Exodus 20:7)

What This Commandment Means

Psalm 8:1 O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.

Psalm 29:2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness.

Psalm 72:19 Blessed be his glorious name forever; may the whole earth be filled with his glory! Amen and Amen!

Psalm 135:13 Your name, O Lord, endures forever, your renown, O Lord, throughout all ages.

This commandment teaches us how to treat God’s name, character, Word, and authority in our daily life.

We should not bring the infinitely, majestic holy God’s name down to worldly fleshly in vain conversation. The Old Testament Hebrew scribes never even pronounced the name of God as God is infinitely Holy.

When we hear this command, we often think about unbelievers who curse God. But the truth is, many Christians today are also guilty of breaking this commandment. Even the modern church has failed to teach it clearly.

This commandment should convict our hearts and lead us to repentance.

God’s Name Is Above Every Name

In a courtroom, we call a judge “Your Honor.” We respect kings, police officers, and leaders because of their authority.

But what about God?

He is not just a ruler of a nation—He is the Ruler of the whole universe.

The Bible says:

On earth, we honor people because of their title. But God is different. He is not honored only because of a title—but because of who He is.

He is holy by nature.

Jesus taught us to pray:

God’s name is not like our name. Our names are given by earthly parents. But God’s name is holy, heavenly, and above all names.

Psalm 83:18 that they may know that you alone,   whose name is the Lord, are the Most High over all the earth

God’s Name Is Holy

If you insult a judge in court, you will be punished. How much more if you dishonor God?

The Bible says:

God’s name must be treated with deep respect and fear.

Blaspheming the name of the Lord

Blasphemy means speaking against God, disrespecting Him, or treating holy things in an unholy way.

Today, God’s name is mocked everywhere—especially in media and entertainment. Many Christians listen or watch things where God’s name is used carelessly or in a sinful way.

If you enjoy hearing God’s name dishonored, something is wrong in your heart.

God’s name is holy. This is not a small sin.

Some say they know God, but their lives say otherwise.

There are many who call themselves as Christians but in their talk they blaspheme God’s name publicly.

Instead of being a light, you become a stumbling block.

Cursing God when they are under stress.

Some people speak angrily against God when life becomes hard. When God appeared giving the Ten Commandments in Mt.Sinai, Israelites trembled and promised to obey God. But when in the wilderness of hardship they complained and murmured against God.

Job suffered greatly, yet his wife told him:

When people are under stress, what comes out of their mouth reveals their heart. God will test us if we truly love him or not under stress. Many fail as stress reveals our heart of unbelief and we murmur and complain against God, like the children of Israel in the wilderness.

Remember the one thief who cursed Jesus by saying, ““Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!”

Luke 23:39

Pain exposed his unbelief, while the other thief turned in humility.

They speak God’s Word but live in sin. This dishonors God.

Using God’s name in jokes or entertainment

Comedy, movies, and social media often use God or Jesus as punchlines. God’s sacred holy name is used for entertainment and jokes. Many unbelievers watch these worldly entertaining videos/movies and they laugh, I wonder how many church going Christians watch and laugh.

Casual and careless use of God’s name

Using God’s name as a filler or expression:

Oh my God” OMG, Jesus! As an expression.

Jesus!” as a reaction
This treats God as common, no respect and not holy. This is taking God’s name in vain.

God’s name should not be used lightly. It must be spoken with respect and holy fear.
Scripture:Hallowed be Your name” (Matthew 6:9)

Using God’s name to justify sin

God understands” while continuing in sin

Claiming God supports ungodly lifestyles. God understands I am homosexual, God understands my sinful situation, compromising in sinful behavior and using God’s name as an escape. This misrepresents His holy nature.
Scripture: Isaiah 5:20

Using God’s Name to support a lie in swearing

People say, “I swear to God,” but lie.

Jesus said:

Using God’s name to support a lie and compromise sin is a serious sin.

False teaching in God’s name

This is where they put their feelings and say People “God told me” or twist Scripture to promote their messages as they put personal opinions as divine truth. Also this includes the prosperity gospel, false prophecies as they put lies in God’s mouth. This is a very serious sin.

 Scripture: Jeremiah 14:14; 23:16

Some treat God lightly—even in church worship

They mix God’s Word with jokes, humor, entertainment, and distraction. Worship becomes about feelings and emotions instead of truth.

But God is not to be treated casually in a worldly way.

Remember Nadab and Abihu sons of Aaron the high priest.

God is holy. We must approach Him the right way.

Conclusion

We live in a time where people have little fear of God and no respect and honor to God.

The media mocks Him. Many churches lack reverence. Worship has become entertainment. Preaching often focuses on making people feel good instead of honoring God.

We need to take the name of God for his glory, use it to magnify God, not just in words when you come to church but in your daily life.

But God is glorious, holy, and worthy of fear.

Abraham said:

The closer we come to God, the more humble we become.

We must honor God’s name in our words, our actions, our worship and in our daily lives.

Be loyal to God. Trust Him. Fear Him. His name is holy. Do not take it lightly.
