Iglesia ni Cristo (INC), which translates to "Church of Christ" in English, is a large, independent Christian church that originated in the Philippines. It was founded by Felix Manalo and officially registered with the Philippine government on July 27, 1914. The church has since grown to become a global organization with congregations in many countries.
Iglesia ni Cristo's doctrines differ significantly from mainstream Christianity, particularly concerning the nature of God, Jesus Christ, and salvation.
INC Teaching:
Jesus Christ is only a man, not God.
He is the Son of God but not divine in nature.
They deny the Trinity.
Bible Teaching:
Jesus is both fully God and fully man.
John 1:1, 14 – “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… and the Word became flesh.”
John 20:28 – Thomas said to Jesus, “My Lord and my God.”
Colossians 2:9 – “In Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily.”
INC Teaching:
Denies the Trinity as unbiblical.
Teaches that the Father is the only true God.
Bible Teaching:
The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are distinct Persons yet one God.
Matthew 28:19 – “Baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”
2 Corinthians 13:14 – The grace of Christ, love of God, and fellowship of the Holy Spirit.
INC Teaching:
Salvation is found only inside the Iglesia ni Cristo organization.
One must be a member and submit to its leadership to be saved.
Bible Teaching:
Salvation is through faith in Jesus Christ alone, not through membership in any organization.
Ephesians 2:8–9 – “By grace you have been saved through faith… not of works.”
Acts 4:12 – “There is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Jesus, not an institution).
INC Teaching:
Their official magazine (Pasugo) and church leadership interpret the Bible with final authority.
Members are discouraged from independent Bible study.
Bible Teaching:
Scripture alone is the final authority.
2 Timothy 3:16–17 – “All Scripture is breathed out by God… that the man of God may be complete.”
Acts 17:11 – The Bereans examined the Scriptures daily to see if Paul’s teaching was true.
INC Teaching:
Only INC is the true church established by Christ in 1914 through Felix Manalo.
Outside INC, no salvation.
Bible Teaching:
The true church is the body of Christ, made up of all believers worldwide who put their trust in Jesus.
1 Corinthians 12:27 – “Now you are the body of Christ, and individually members of it.”
Romans 10:9 – Salvation depends on confessing Jesus as Lord and believing in Him, not joining a man-made organization.
INC Teaching:
Felix Manalo is the “last messenger of God” (sugo) prophesied in the Bible.
Bible Teaching:
No prophecy mentions Felix Manalo.
Jesus Himself is the final and ultimate messenger.
Hebrews 1:1–2 – “God… has spoken to us by His Son.”
Galatians 1:8 – Any new gospel is cursed, even if from an angel.
Iglesia ni Cristo members are expected to follow a strict code of conduct and participate actively in the church.
Worship Services: Members are required to attend worship services twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays.
Offerings: While the church does not practice tithing, members are expected to give voluntary offerings and donations.
Marriage and Social Life: Members are strongly encouraged to marry within the faith. Engaging in certain social activities or joining other religious organizations is discouraged.
Political Unity: The church is known for its practice of bloc voting during elections, where the entire membership is instructed to vote for a specific list of candidates chosen by the church's leadership.
INC exalts an institution and a human founder as essential for salvation.
The Bible exalts Jesus Christ alone as Lord, God, and Savior.
The gospel of the Bible is about grace through Christ, while INC’s gospel ties salvation to church membership and submission to Manalo’s teachings.
