Why Does Calvinism Have a Bad Reputation Today?
By Nick Bibile
Many people think Calvinism was started by John Calvin. But that is not true. Calvin did not create all its teachings. It is named after him because he was an important leader during the Protestant Reformation. However, many of these ideas go back earlier, especially to Augustine of Hippo, and were later explained more by other Reformers.
That is why Calvinism is also called Reformed Theology, the Doctrines of Grace, or Sovereign Grace Theology.
So why does Calvinism have a bad reputation today?
First, many people
misunderstand it.
Some people confuse it with
Hyper-Calvinism.
When they hear that God chooses who will be saved, they think this
means God is unfair or that our choices do not matter. But true
Calvinism does not teach that.
Second, some
Calvinists explain it badly.
Sometimes Calvinists sound
proud, harsh, or always ready to argue. Because of this, people think
the teaching itself is cold or unkind. This often happens with
younger believers who see errors in others but do not respond with
patience or humility.
The Bible says we should
speak the truth “with gentleness and respect” (1 Peter 3:15).
We
must remember this is a discussion among Christians, so we should
speak in a loving and gentle way not in hostility.
Third, people do
not like the idea of God being fully in control.
Calvinism
teaches that God rules over everything. But today, many people value
freedom and personal choice more, so they struggle to accept this
teaching.
Fourth, the
internet makes things worse.
Online, people argue a lot
and often misunderstand each other. This creates confusion and gives
Calvinism a bad image.
Finally, some
people do not understand its history.
Some ask, “Why
share the gospel if God has already chosen?” But this shows a lack
of understanding. Many of the greatest evangelists and missionaries
in history believed these teachings. Calvinism has often encouraged
people to preach the gospel, not stop them.
