Mephibosheth a true heart of a loyal servant

2 Samuel chapter 9:1 And David said, “Is there still anyone left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan's sake?”

This is an amazing story where you will learn the kindness of king David to a disabled person and how we as Christians show the love of Christ to those who are handicapped and disabled.

Mephibosheth was the only surviving son of Jonathan, David’s beloved friend. Since he was crippled from childhood, he had always depended on others to care for him. When David became king, he wanted to show kindness to Jonathan’s family, so he brought Mephibosheth into his palace, welcomed him like his own son, and gave him all the land that once belonged to King Saul. Ziba, a servant from Saul’s household, was appointed to take care of Mephibosheth’s property.

But one day, when David fled Jerusalem because of the rebellion led by his son Absalom, something unexpected happened. Ziba came to David with donkeys, food, and wine—everything a king on the run might need. David was grateful, but he asked, “Where is your master’s son, Mephibosheth?”

Ziba answered, “He stayed in Jerusalem. He thinks the kingdom will now return to him, since he is Saul’s grandson.”

This news hurt David. It felt like a betrayal from someone he had loved and cared for. Without investigating further, David made a quick decision: he gave all of Mephibosheth’s land to Ziba. Ziba bowed deeply, acting humble, but his heart was false. His gifts hid his deceit.

Later, when David returned as king, he finally met Mephibosheth. The man looked weary, unwashed, and sorrowful. He had not trimmed his beard, washed his feet, or changed clothes the entire time David was gone. It was clear he had been mourning, not celebrating.

When David asked why he hadn’t come with him, Mephibosheth explained gently, “My servant tricked me. Because I am crippled, I depend on him to saddle my donkey. But instead, he left me behind and lied to you. My lord, you have always shown me kindness. I trust your judgment.”

Mephibosheth’s humility and brokenness softened David’s heart. But since he had already given Ziba the land, David made a compromise: “You and Ziba shall divide the land.”

Mephibosheth didn’t argue. Instead, he said, “Let Ziba take it all. I’m just grateful my king has returned safely.”

In that moment, David saw the true heart of a loyal servant—not in wealth, power, or land, but in love and faithfulness. Mephibosheth cared more about David’s safety than about his own rights.

Lessons learned for our practical life.

1. False kindness can hide a deceitful heart.
Ziba looked generous, but his heart was full of lies and selfish ambition.

2. Rushed judgments lead to unfair decisions.
David acted quickly in fear and grief, and it caused injustice.

3. True loyalty shows itself in sorrow and humility, not in words alone.
Mephibosheth’s appearance and attitude proved his faithful heart.

4. The humble accept God’s providence with peace.
Mephibosheth cared more about David than about land or status.
