God’s Standard for Truth in Every Age

By Nick Bibile

Isaiah 8:20 – “To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because they have no dawn.”

Isaiah spoke these words to Judah during a season of fear, confusion, and deep spiritual compromise. The nation was facing real threats, yet instead of humbling themselves before the Lord, many turned to mediums, spiritists, and false counselors for guidance (Isaiah 8:19). God’s response was not complicated or mystical—it was direct and uncompromising: His Word alone is the final authority.

To the law and to the testimony” means that every voice, every message, and every claim to truth must be judged by God’s revealed Word. Anyone who speaks apart from it, no matter how confident or spiritual they appear, is still walking in darkness—they have no dawn.”

We are living in a similar age. Satan, the god of this world (2 Corinthians 4:4), is actively working to confuse the church and pull people away from Scripture. Many today place their trust in astrology, superstition, human philosophy, false religions, emotional experiences, and worldly wisdom. Even within the church, feelings often replace doctrine, and popularity replaces truth.

Yet God’s answer has not changed.

Not opinions.
Not personal feelings.
Not cultural trends.
Not charismatic personalities.

God directs His people back to His Word.

Psalm 119:105 – “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

God’s Word alone gives light, clarity, and direction. Without it, even sincere people stumble.

There are many false teachers who sound appealing to the flesh. Their messages may be positive, inspiring, and convincing—but that does not make them true. Scripture commands us to filter everything through the Bible, carefully examined in its proper context.

Acts 17:11The Bereans were commended because they examined the Scriptures daily to see if what they were taught was true.
1 John 4:1 – “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God.”

Truth and light come from God’s Word—not from human wisdom, experiences, or emotions.

We must pray and ask the Lord to lead us by His Word and protect us from error. Any teacher, preacher, or evangelist who contradicts Scripture, adds to it, or distorts it must be rejected—no matter how popular or powerful they appear.

Galatians 1:8–9Even an angel is to be rejected if he preaches another gospel.
Matthew 15:9Teaching man-made doctrines while setting aside God’s commands.
Jeremiah 23:16False prophets speak visions from their own minds, not from the mouth of the Lord.

Truth is not determined by sincerity, popularity, large followings, emotional impact, or even miracles. Truth is determined by God’s Word rightly understood. Every sermon must be tested by Scripture—even when preached by well-known or respected teachers.

Isaiah 8:20 reminds us that God’s Word is the absolute standard of truth in every age. Anyone who speaks apart from it, no matter how religious they sound, remains in spiritual darkness.

To the law and to the testimony—always.
