THE SIN OF SUPERSTITION

By Nick Bibile

Hebrews 11:6 "Without Faith it is impossible to please God."

Let's Start Here

The human mind finds it easier to believe in lies, false ideas, and superstitions than to believe the Word of God. This is not just an intellectual problem — it is a sin problem that goes all the way back to Adam and Eve. Superstition is not a harmless tradition. It is a spiritual danger that can pull us away from God.

Common Superstitions in Filipino Culture

Many of these beliefs have been passed down from grandparents to parents to children. They are so common that most people do not even think about them. Here are some examples:

These beliefs are very common — even among people who go to church every Sunday. But just because something is common does not make it right. We need to look at what the Bible says.

What Is Superstition?

Superstition is the belief that certain things, signs, or actions can bring you good luck or bad luck — apart from God. It is believing that there is some power or force outside of God that controls what happens to you.

In the Philippines, many of these beliefs come from the old religious practices of our ancestors, who believed that spirits and invisible forces controlled daily life. Even after many Filipinos became Christians, these old beliefs did not fully go away. Instead, they mixed with Christianity. The Bible has a strong word for this kind of mixing — it is called idolatry.

"You shall have no other gods before me." — Exodus 20:3

Think about it this way: if you believe that sweeping at night drives away your blessings, you are saying that a broom — not God — controls your blessings. If you are afraid of a black cat, you are giving that cat a power that only God has. These may seem like small things, but they are a big deal to God.

Why Is Superstition a Sin?

1. It Breaks the Second Commandment

God gave us Ten Commandments. The Second Commandment says we must not worship anything other than God. It is not just about bowing down to statues. It is about giving any power, fear, or trust to something that is not God.

When we follow superstitions, we are doing exactly that. We are saying: "This force, this sign, this ritual has power over my life." That is a form of false worship — even if it does not look like worship on the outside.

2. It Says God Is Not in Control

The Bible is very clear that God controls everything — every outcome, every blessing, every difficulty in our lives.

Proverbs 16:33 "The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord."

Matthew 10:29-30 "Not one sparrow will fall to the ground apart from your Father. Even the hairs of your head are all numbered."

Every superstition quietly says: "God is not enough. You also need to watch out for this sign or follow this ritual." That is a lie. God is fully in control. Nothing happens to you outside of His knowledge and will.

3. It Is Driven by Fear, Not Faith

Superstition does not come from trust — it comes from fear. Fear that something bad will happen if you do not follow the rules. Fear of spirits. Fear of bad luck. But God does not want His children to live in fear.

1 John 4:18 "There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear."

2 Timothy 1:7 "God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and a sound mind."

If you are always afraid of what might happen because of an omen or a broken rule, you are not living in faith. You are living in bondage. God wants you to be free.

4. It Is One of Satan's Tricks

There are only two spiritual powers in the universe: God and Satan. God has given us everything we need in His Word. But Satan wants to pull us away from God — and he uses fear to do it.

The devil whispers: "Be careful. That black cat means something bad is coming. You should be worried." He puts fear in your heart so that you think about the omen instead of thinking about God. That is his plan — to keep you distracted, afraid, and far from the truth.

John 8:44 "The devil... is a liar and the father of lies."

1 Peter 5:8 "Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour."

Superstition is not just a cultural tradition. It is a weapon Satan uses to keep people away from God.

Ephesians 4:17 "You must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds."

Faith or Feelings — Which Will You Follow?

One of the biggest problems with superstition is that it is built on feelings, not on God's Word. We feel afraid. We feel like something bad might happen. So we follow the superstition just to be safe.

But God calls us to live by faith — and faith comes from hearing His Word, not from our feelings.

Romans 10:17 "So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ."

Let's look at two examples from the Bible:

Example 1 — The Spies Who Were Afraid (Numbers 13)

Moses sent 12 spies into the Promised Land. Ten of them came back afraid. They said, "The people there are giants! We looked like grasshoppers next to them!" Their feelings told them it was impossible. Because they trusted their feelings more than God's promise, the whole nation of Israel wandered in the desert for 40 more years.

Example 2 — David Who Was Brave (1 Samuel 17)

When David faced Goliath, everyone else was terrified. Goliath was huge. By all appearances, David had no chance. But David did not look at the giant — he looked at God. He said, "The battle is the Lord's!" And he won. David chose faith over feelings — and God gave him the victory.

"Everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory — our faith." — 1 John 5:4

A Word to Filipino Christians

Filipino culture is rich and beautiful. The warmth, the love for family, the sense of community — these are wonderful gifts from God. But not everything in our culture is pleasing to God. Culture is made by fallen human beings and needs to be examined by Scripture.

It is hard to let go of superstitions that your lola or lolo taught you. It feels disrespectful. But loving your family does not mean agreeing with everything they believe. The most loving thing you can do is gently and kindly share the truth with them.

The Bible says that when you become a Christian, the old things pass away:

2 Corinthians 5:17 "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come."

The old beliefs, the old fears, the old rituals — these are part of the old life. In Christ, you are new. You do not have to live under those fears anymore.

How to Break Free from Superstition

Step 1 — Read and Know the Bible

The more you know God's Word, the less power superstition has over you. Read your Bible every day. Let God's promises replace the old fears.

Step 2 — Repent and Turn Away

Ask God to forgive you for trusting in superstitions. Make a clear decision to stop following them. Renounce them — out loud if it helps. God will hear you and cleanse you.

Step 3 — Pray Instead of Worry

The next time you feel afraid of an omen or a superstition, do not follow it — pray instead. Tell God about your fear. He promises to give you peace.

Philippians 4:6-7 "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer... let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God... will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

Step 4 — Help Others Do the Same

If God has freed you from superstition, share that freedom with others. Gently and lovingly point your family and friends to the Word of God. Do not argue — just show them the truth.

In Closing: God Is Greater

Superstition says that black cats, nighttime brooms, wet hair, and funeral food have power over your life. The Bible says: No, they do not. God — and God alone — has power over your life.

You are not at the mercy of bad omens. You are not controlled by spirits that your ancestors feared. You are a child of the living God, and He is greater than anything in this world.

1 John 4:4 "Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world."

"Without Faith it is impossible to please God." — Hebrews 11:6

Walk by faith. Live by God's Word. Trust in Him alone — not in signs, not in rituals, not in the fears of the past.
