Text: “If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone rises from the dead.” — Luke 16:31
The warnings found in God's Word are more effective for awakening sinners and leading them to repentance than even if someone returned from the dead to warn them.
Many people think:
"If I could see hell with my own eyes, hear the cries of the damned, or listen to someone who had actually experienced eternal punishment, then I would surely repent."
But Christ teaches the opposite. If people refuse to listen to God's revealed Word, they would not truly be persuaded even by a miracle as extraordinary as a person rising from the dead.
God has already given humanity the most suitable and powerful means for salvation: the Holy Scriptures.
A person returning from the dead might tell us what he has seen or experienced. Yet God knows infinitely more.
God sees every soul in heaven and hell. He knows every sorrow, every pain, every cry, and every act of His righteous judgment.
The damned experience God's wrath, but God is the One who administers it. Therefore, no created being can describe hell as perfectly and truthfully as God Himself.
When Scripture speaks about judgment, it comes from the One who knows all things completely.
If a dead person appeared and warned us, how could we know with absolute certainty that he was not deceived or misleading us?
Human testimony can fail.
But God cannot lie.
Everything God declares is perfectly true. His Word rests upon the authority of His own holy character.
Therefore, Scripture provides a far more reliable foundation than any report from a departed spirit.
Warnings carry more force when they come from someone of great authority.
A king's command carries more weight than the advice of an ordinary citizen.
But God is infinitely greater than all kings.
The One who created heaven and earth, who holds every life in His hand, is the One speaking in Scripture.
When God warns sinners about judgment, it is not merely information—it is the voice of the Sovereign Lord of the universe.
When rulers become personally involved in something, it shows that the matter is important.
Throughout history God has repeatedly warned sinners:
Through the prophets.
Through the apostles.
Through His written Word.
Through His Son, Jesus Christ.
The fact that God Himself has spoken so often and so earnestly about salvation demonstrates how serious the matter truly is.
Nothing reveals the importance of escaping God's wrath more than God's own efforts to warn us.
The warnings of Scripture come from the very One who will judge every person.
God does not merely tell us that punishment exists.
He tells us:
"If you continue in rebellion, I will judge you."
A warning from the Judge Himself carries far greater weight than a warning from another person.
The One who speaks in Scripture is the same One before whose throne every sinner will one day stand.
God understands human nature perfectly.
He knows exactly what kind of warnings, promises, commands, and invitations are best suited to lead sinners to repentance.
A person returning from hell might only terrify people into despair.
God's Word, however, not only warns of judgment but also reveals mercy, grace, forgiveness, and salvation through Christ.
Scripture wounds, but it also heals.
It exposes sin, yet points sinners to the Savior.
Many imagine:
"If I saw a miracle, I would believe."
"If I heard God speak audibly, I would repent."
"If I saw someone rise from the dead, I would change."
Yet the Bible repeatedly shows otherwise.
The Israelites witnessed the plagues of Egypt, the parting of the Red Sea, the pillar of fire, manna from heaven, and God's voice from Mount Sinai. Yet they still rebelled.
The Jews saw the miracles of Christ, heard His preaching, and watched Him heal the sick and raise the dead. Yet many still rejected Him.
The problem is not a lack of evidence.
The problem is the sinful human heart.
A heart unwilling to submit to God will resist even the greatest miracles.
We often marvel at the unbelief of Israel or the Jews who rejected Christ.
Yet our own generation possesses even greater privileges:
The completed Bible.
The clear revelation of the gospel.
The preaching of Christ crucified.
Easy access to Scripture.
Still many remain unmoved.
This reveals the terrible hardness of fallen humanity.
If people remain indifferent after hearing God's own Word, their hearts are harder than they realize.
No sinner will be able to say:
"God did not warn me."
God has provided the best possible means of instruction.
He has spoken through Scripture.
He has sent prophets, apostles, and preachers.
Most of all, He has sent His Son.
Those who perish do so not because God failed to warn them, but because they refused to listen.
Therefore God's judgment is completely righteous.
Since Scripture is God's appointed means for awakening sinners and bringing them to salvation, we must not neglect it.
Read it carefully.
Hear it preached faithfully.
Meditate on it daily.
Obey what it commands.
The Bible is not merely a religious book; it is God's voice calling sinners to life.
Every warning, promise, invitation, and command is given for our eternal good.
As Christ said:
"If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace!" (Luke 19:42)
Therefore, while God's Word is still available to us, let us hear it, believe it, and respond to it. For if we refuse the testimony of God in Scripture, neither would we be persuaded though someone rose from the dead.
