God: The Christian's Greatest Treasure

Based on Psalm 73:25

By Jonathan Edwards

Modern English Adaptation

"Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides You."
— Psalm 73:25

Introduction

The central truth taught in these words is this:

God Himself is the highest good and greatest possession of every true Christian.

The psalmist is not merely saying that God gives good things. He is saying that God Himself is the good thing he desires above all others. His heart is fixed on God as his supreme treasure, both in heaven and on earth.

When he looks toward heaven, he asks, "Whom have I there but You?" The glory of heaven is not primarily its beauty, its freedom from suffering, or even the company of angels and redeemed saints. The greatest glory of heaven is that God is there. If God were absent, heaven would cease to be heaven.

Likewise, when he considers the things of this world, he declares, "There is nothing on earth that I desire besides You." This does not mean that he has no appreciation for earthly blessings. God has given many good gifts—family, friends, health, provision, and countless comforts. Yet none of these things can compare with God Himself. They are valuable only because they come from Him and lead us to Him.

The psalmist's heart has reached the point where all created things fade in comparison to the Creator. God is not merely one good among many. He is the source of every good and infinitely more precious than all His gifts combined.

Doctrine

From this passage we learn:

God is the believer's chosen and all-sufficient portion.

A "portion" is an inheritance, possession, or share that belongs to someone. People seek their portion in different things. Some find it in wealth. Others seek it in pleasure, power, reputation, relationships, or achievement.

But the Christian has chosen a different portion.

The believer can say:

"Let others seek their happiness in earthly treasures. Let them pursue riches, honor, and worldly success. As for me, God Himself is my inheritance. He is my wealth, my joy, my security, and my eternal reward."

This is the distinguishing mark of genuine faith. The true Christian values God above everything else.

Why God Is the Best Portion

1. God Is an Infinite Good

Everything in this world is limited.

Earthly possessions may be large, but they are never enough to satisfy the human soul. The soul was made for something greater than created things.

Money can buy comfort, but not peace with God.
Power can command people, but not the conscience.
Pleasure can entertain for a season, but it cannot satisfy forever.

The human heart has desires that reach beyond the boundaries of this world.

Only God is infinite.

Because He is infinite in wisdom, power, holiness, goodness, and love, He alone can fully satisfy the soul He created. Every created good is like a drop of water. God is the ocean from which every drop comes.

2. God Is an Unchanging Good

Everything earthly is subject to change.

Health declines.
Riches disappear.
Friendships end.
Nations rise and fall.
Life itself passes away.

Many people build their happiness on things that can be lost in a moment.

But God never changes.

His character remains the same.
His promises remain sure.
His love for His people does not fail.

What comfort it is to possess a treasure that can never decay, diminish, or disappear.

The believer's inheritance is secure because it is found in the eternal God.

3. God Is a Sufficient Good

Many earthly blessings meet only one need.

Food satisfies hunger.
Knowledge informs the mind.
Friendship eases loneliness.

But no created thing can meet every need of the human soul.

God can.

In Him there is wisdom for our ignorance, strength for our weakness, mercy for our guilt, comfort for our sorrow, guidance for our confusion, and life for our deadness.

Whatever the believer lacks, it can ultimately be found in God.

4. God Is an Eternal Good

The greatest earthly pleasures are temporary.

Even the happiest experiences eventually end.

Death separates us from everything we possess in this life.

But God remains forever.

The believer's relationship with God does not end at death; it is perfected by death.

What begins in grace on earth continues in glory forever.

The Christian's treasure is one that will never be exhausted throughout endless ages of eternity.

The Glory of Heaven

Many people think of heaven primarily as a place.

Scripture certainly describes heaven as a place of beauty, joy, holiness, and peace.

Yet the chief blessing of heaven is not the place itself.

The greatest blessing of heaven is the immediate enjoyment of God.

The redeemed will see His glory more clearly than ever before. They will love Him without sin, worship Him without distraction, and delight in Him without interruption.

All the joys of heaven flow from the presence of God.

Therefore the Christian longs for heaven chiefly because he longs for God.

Application

1. Examine What You Treasure Most

Every person has a portion.

The question is: What is yours?

What occupies your thoughts?
What excites your heart?
What would most devastate you if it were taken away?

The answer may reveal where your true treasure lies.

If God is not your greatest desire, then something else has taken His place.

2. Learn the Vanity of Earthly Things

The world constantly promises satisfaction but cannot deliver it.

Many spend their lives chasing wealth, success, pleasure, or recognition, only to discover that these things leave the heart empty.

Created things were never intended to bear the weight of our deepest hopes.

They are good servants but terrible gods.

Only God can satisfy the soul.

3. Find Comfort in God During Affliction

When trials come, believers may lose many earthly comforts.

Yet if they still possess God, they have not lost their greatest treasure.

Poverty cannot take Him away.
Sickness cannot take Him away.
Persecution cannot take Him away.
Death itself cannot take Him away.

The Christian may say:

"Though all else fails, God remains my portion forever."

4. Seek God Above His Gifts

Many people desire God's blessings more than God Himself.

They seek peace, forgiveness, protection, or prosperity.

These blessings are precious, but they are not the ultimate goal.

The highest blessing God gives is Himself.

True religion reaches its fullest expression when the soul says:

"Not merely what God can give me, but God Himself is what I desire."

Conclusion

The testimony of every mature believer is the testimony of the psalmist:

"Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides You."

God is the Christian's greatest treasure, highest joy, surest security, and eternal inheritance.

All earthly things are temporary and limited. God alone is infinite, unchanging, sufficient, and everlasting.

Therefore, the believer's happiness rests not ultimately in heaven, blessings, or gifts, but in God Himself.

And because God belongs to His people forever, they possess a treasure that can never be lost.
