How
to answer 1 Kings 22:23 Now
therefore behold, the Lord
has
put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these your prophets; the Lord
has
declared disaster for you.”
No—God does not lie or
deceive. 1
Kings 22:23
teaches
God’s judicial
judgment,
not moral deception.
This
verse must be read in its context, not taking a scripture out of
context.
1. God cannot lie.
Hebrews 6:18 it is impossible for God to lie
Numbers
23:19
– “God
is not a man, that He should lie…”
Titus
1:2
– God
“cannot lie”
God is judging Ahab, a king who rejected God’s word repeatedly, he loved false prophets and hated God’s truth, then God sends Micaiah the prophet of God to warn him so he would repent but Ahab still rejects God’s truth.
God did not produce a lying spirit but allowed a lying spirit, as an act of judgement against Ahab. God does not create lies but those who are unrepentant God allows them to sin according to their sinful nature.
Ahab
was warned in advance. An evil spirit—already a liar by
nature—steps forward and says, “I
will deceive him.” It
was not God who suggested the lying but the evil spirit and God
permits just like in Job
1–2
– Satan
acts only by God’s permission
Luke
22:31
– “Satan
demanded to sift you”
God
permits the spirit to do what it already wants to do. Here Ahab was
warned in advance as God sends Micaiah to expose the lie before
Ahab
goes to battle. Ahab hears the truth and still chooses the lie. God’s
role here is judicial,
not deceptive. God judged Ahab by letting him follow the lies he
loved.
