Is Hebrews 6:4-6 saying that a believer can lose Salvation?

(Newly Revised)

Hebrews 6:4–6 (ESV)

For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt.”

Is this passage teaching that true believers can lose their salvation?

This passage does not teach that a true believer can lose salvation. Rather, it is a severe warning against apostasya decisive, informed rejection of Christ by those who have been deeply exposed to the gospel, but were never truly converted. Let us see the big picture in context.

The Historical and Immediate Context

The original audience consisted of Jewish Christians under pressure to abandon Christ and return to Judaism (cf. Hebrews 10:32–39). This “falling away” is not ordinary sin or spiritual struggle—it is a decisive rejection of Christ in favor of the old covenant system (Hebrews 10:26–29).

Just a few verses later, the author reassures his readers:

Yet in your case, beloved, we feel sure of better things—things that belong to salvation” (Hebrews 6:9).

This is crucial. The writer distinguishes between those he is warning about and those who truly possess salvation. The warning is preventive.

These people were, close to Salvation, Yet Not Saved

Scripture repeatedly acknowledges that a person can come very near to the truth without being truly converted:

A fitting example is Judas Iscariot:

He was present for Christ’s teaching and miracles (Matthew 10:1–4)

Judas experienced much—but was never regenerated.

This refers to exposure to gospel truth, not regeneration.

Let us observe the highlights carefully.

These individuals were enlightened — they understood the gospel intellectually.

But despite all that, they never truly belonged to Christ inwardly. So when they “fall away,” this isn’t a believer losing salvation—it’s someone who fully rejects Christ after clearly knowing what they are rejecting. That kind of rejection is especially serious because it’s done purposely with their own will, not ignorance.

Crucifying the Son of God again” means they are publicly siding against Christ, treating Him as false or worthless after once outwardly professing Him.

And why is it “impossible to renew them again to repentance”?

It is not that God lacks power—but that their hearts have become so hardened through willful rejection of known truth that they will not repent. They’ve shut themselves off from the very means God uses to bring repentance.

Romans 1:21-25 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. 24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.

Hebrews 6:4-6 is NOT Teaching a believer would lose eternal life.

Beloved, eternal life is not temporary it’s eternal. If a believer can lose salvation, what hope do you have, you have no confidence and security of our Great God.

Jesus’ own words

Salvation as a finished, secure reality

Nothing can separate believers from Christ

God keeps and completes His work

Sealed and guaranteed by the Spirit

Christ’s work actually saves completely

True believers endure because of God’s power

This is how you know that you are a true born again Christian. You are a changed person. Your behavior is changed, you hate sin, love God’s word and wants to live a holy life. You will have an intmate personal relationship with Christ. See the following scriptures.

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

John 15:8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.

Psalm 97:10 — “O you who love the Lord, hate evil!”

1 John 3:9 — “No one born of God makes a practice of sinning… and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God.”

A believer can backslide and fall into sin like king David and Peter, this is where God’s mercy and grace comes as the true believer will be convicted of sins and will repent and ask God for forgiveness.

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
