A Solemn Warning for All Churches

(Excerpts from Spurgeon’s Sermon)

By C. H. Spurgeon • Preached February 24, 1856

New Park Street Chapel, Southwark, England

Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy.” — Revelation 3:4

1. The Big Problem: Saying One Thing, Living Another

The first problem Jesus pointed out in the church at Sardis is this: people looked good on the outside, but there was no real life on the inside. Sadly, this is still a common problem today.

Everywhere you go, people call themselves Christians. But it is much harder to find someone whose whole life is truly changed and given over to God. It is as though an entire nation became Christian overnight — but is it real? Is it genuine? Too often, it is not.

Why is there so little difference between the church and the world? Why do many people who claim to follow Christ chase the same goals, enjoy the same pleasures, and live by the same values as people who do not follow Him at all?

2. Signs of a Church That Has Lost Its Life

Look honestly at many churches today. There is no shortage of names on the membership roll — but there is a serious lack of spiritual life. Consider these warning signs:

Prayer meetings are nearly empty.

The excitement and boldness of the early church is gone.

The power of the Holy Spirit seems absent.

Sincere, heart-felt devotion to God is rare.

There are few people willing to stand firm for truth when it costs them something.

One might ask: has God’s glory truly departed from many of our gatherings?

3. Beautiful Buildings, Empty Hearts

Many churches today have invested in beautiful buildings, skilled musicians, polished programmes, and impressive worship services. From the outside, everything looks wonderful. But what good is a beautifully decorated shell if the spiritual life inside is gone?

A church can have all the style in the world and still lack the substance that truly matters. What God values is not impressive appearance, but sincere hearts and genuine faith.

4. Watered-Down Preaching

Another serious problem is this: the full truth of God’s Word is being held back. Many preachers share truth timidly — or not at all — as though it does not really matter whether people are saved or lost, whether heaven is full or empty, or whether Christ receives the reward He died for.

If someone dares to speak with urgency and passion, people say, “You are too emotional.” But should we not be moved when people are lost? Should we not speak with energy when we carry the message of eternal life?

There must be a protest, and we make it now.”

5. The Church Must Wake Up

O Church of God, you have a reputation for being alive — but many of you are spiritually dead. It is time to wake up! Rise from your sleep, and Christ will give you light.

Even faithful, born-again believers are sometimes treated with contempt. They are called narrow-minded, rigid, or extreme simply because they hold firmly to the truth. The great doctrines for which our forefathers gave their lives are now treated as embarrassing.

But look at what history teaches us:

Augustine stood firmly on these truths.

The Puritans preached them every day.

The Bible itself is filled with them on every page.

When a church becomes loose in its beliefs, it tends to drift — from weak Christianity, to human-centred religion, and eventually toward error. Compromise always moves in one direction: downhill.

6. There Is Still Hope: The Faithful Remnant

And yet, take heart! God has not abandoned His people. Even in Sardis, there were a few who remained faithful. The same is true today:

There are still faithful ministers who preach the whole truth.

There are still praying believers who cry out to God.

There are still courageous men and women who will not compromise.

There are still young believers standing firm in the face of temptation.

It is not all corrupt. God always preserves “a remnant according to the election of grace” (Romans 11:5).

7. What Should We Do?

In light of all this, here is the call to action:

Pray earnestly for God to purify His church and restore her power.

Ask God to remove spiritual darkness and bring truth back to the centre.

Examine yourself honestly before God. Do not merely play the part of a Christian — be one.

Only a few in Sardis were worthy to walk with Christ in white. Make it your goal to be among that few. Do not settle for a name without a life to match it.

Final Prayer

May God grant you grace to stand, mercy to endure, and faith to be found among the wheat when the chaff is burned. May the Lord bless this warning, for Christ’s sake. Amen.
