Romans 8:12 – “So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.”
Sin is not only a crime against God—it is also a debt we owe to Him.
You may ask, “How can I owe God a debt? I do not owe Him any money.” Let me explain it in simple human terms.
Imagine I own a new and expensive car, and I let you borrow it. If you damage it so badly that I can no longer use it, then you owe me a debt. You have wronged me because I am the injured party.
Now let us apply that spiritually.
Because of our sin, we have offended God. We have violated His holy law, dishonored His name, and rebelled against His rightful authority. God is the offended and injured party, and therefore we owe Him a debt—a moral and spiritual debt that we cannot pay on our own.
This is why Jesus taught us to pray:
Matthew 6:12 – “And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.”
Our sins are described as debts because they bring guilt and obligation before a holy God.
But here is the glorious hope of the gospel:
Colossians 2:13–14 – “God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.”
What wonderful news!
Jesus Christ canceled the debt we owed. At the cross, He took our place. He bore our punishment. He satisfied the justice of God. The record of our guilt was nailed to the cross.
That is why Jesus cried out:
“It is finished.”
The debt was paid in full.
My beloved, Christ settled the account completely. Nothing remains for us to pay for our salvation. He did it all.
So what do we owe to Christ?
LOVE.
Think about it:
He died in your place—what
do you owe?
LOVE.
He forgave all your
sins—what do you owe?
LOVE.
He gave you eternal
life—what do you owe?
LOVE.
He is coming again to take
you to heaven—what do you owe?
LOVE.
And how do we show that love?
Jesus tells us clearly:
John 14:15 – “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”
John 14:23 – “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word…”
John 14:24 – “Whoever does not love me does not keep my words.”
Love for Christ is not merely emotional—it is shown through obedience.
My brothers and sisters, the debt we owed to God was an infinite debt, because our sin was committed against an infinitely holy God. It was a debt far beyond our ability to pay.
When we were helpless and condemned, the Savior came to our rescue. He took our punishment upon Himself. He paid the debt in full. The Father was satisfied.
Now our calling is clear:
To love Him.
To obey
Him.
To live for Him.
Not to earn salvation, but because Christ has already accomplished it for us.
May our lives be a grateful response to the One who paid it all.
