Free
will means that humans can think,
choose, and act as they desire.
God
made us with real minds and hearts, not robots.
Scripture:
“Choose this day whom you will serve.” — Joshua 24:15
“Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.” — Revelation 22:17
We are free in the sense that our choices are our own, not forced from outside.
Although
we are free to choose what we want, our wants
are
affected by sin.
A sinful heart chooses sinful things.
We are free to act according to our nature,
But because our nature is sinful, we cannot choose God on our own.
Scripture:
“The mind set on the flesh is hostile to God… it cannot submit to God’s law.” — Romans 8:7–8
“No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him.” — John 6:44
This does not remove freedom; it shows why we need grace.
God
renews our hearts so we can willingly choose Christ.
Grace does
not force us—
it changes
our desires,
so we freely come to Jesus.
Scripture:
“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you.” — Ezekiel 36:26
“For it is God who works in you both to will and to work for His good pleasure.” — Philippians 2:13
Grace makes us able to choose what is good.
After
the Holy Spirit changes us,
our wills become inclined
toward God,
and
we choose Him joyfully.
We still have a will, but now it is strengthened and guided toward righteousness.
Scripture:
“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” — 2 Corinthians 3:17
“Your people will offer themselves freely on the day of Your power.” — Psalm 110:3
In
heaven, believers will still be free—
but unable to sin,
because our hearts will be completely holy.
This is the highest form of freedom.
Scripture:
“They will see His face… and they will reign forever and ever.” — Revelation 22:4–5
“We shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.” — 1 John 3:2
True freedom means being perfectly aligned with God’s will forever.
Humans are free to choose—but our hearts are naturally turned away from God.
Because of sin, we cannot choose God by ourselves.
The Holy Spirit gives a new heart so we freely choose Christ.
In heaven, our freedom will be perfect and without sin.
