The Bible is near you, pick up and read!

By Nick Bibile

Deuteronomy 30:14 (ESV)
“But the word is very near you. It is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can do it.”

God’s Word Is Close, Not Hidden

My beloved, look at the kindness of God. He does not hide His will in heaven or sink it into the deep sea. He brings His Word near. It is not far away, not dark, and not hard to find. God speaks clearly and comes close so that ordinary people may know Him. This is great mercy—that the holy and mighty God makes His truth plain.

God is not a harsh Master. He gives light before He asks for obedience.
(Psalm 119:130; Romans 10:8)

The Word Is Near to You

Deuteronomy 30:14 (ESV)
“But the word is very near you. It is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can do it.”

If you have a Bible near you, then God’s Word is near you. Eternal life is near you. God’s will is near you. His instructions for daily life are near you. If God’s Word is “very near,” what excuses do we often make for neglecting reading the scriptures? What are some “idols” that can quietly turn our hearts away from the Lord in modern life?

What a loss it would be when the Bible is near but yet we have no time and desire to read and study. It can be so close yet too far. it,

“Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart.”
(Jeremiah 15:16)

In Your Mouth — Confessed Truth

The Word is said to be “in your mouth.” This means God’s truth is to be spoken. It is to be confessed, shared, and taught. A believer does not hide God’s Word but speaks it—at home, among fellow believers, and before the world. True faith is not silent; it speaks what it believes.

True faith speaks what the heart believes.
 (2 Corinthians 4:13; Deuteronomy 6:7)

In Your Heart — Received Truth

The Word is also “in your heart.” This is the deeper work of grace. God’s Word is not only heard with the ears but written inside by the Holy Spirit. A heart taught by God loves His commands and desires His truth.

The Spirit makes the Word alive within us.
 (Jeremiah 31:33; Ezekiel 36:26–27)

So That You Can Do It — Obedient Faith

God brings His Word near for a purpose: that you may obey it. He does not command what is impossible. What God commands, He also gives grace to perform. Obedience does not earn eternal life, but it shows a heart that has already been made alive by grace.

Grace does not remove duty; it strengthens it.
 (John 14:15; James 1:22)

Now the audience is placed under solemn, immediate accountability.

A Solemn Call Set Before God and All Creation

Deuteronomy 30:19 (ESV)
“I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live.”
(cf. Deuteronomy 31:28)

Moses does not speak casually or emotionally. He speaks covenantally and judicially. He summons heaven and earth as witnesses, as though standing in a courtroom. All creation is called to testify that God’s will has been clearly revealed. No one can later plead ignorance. God’s Word is not hidden, vague, or inaccessible. It is plain, near, and binding.

Before Israel are two paths, not many. God sets them plainly before the people: life or death, blessing or curse. There is no third option. This echoes the words of Christ Himself: the narrow road that leads to life and the broad road that leads to destruction (Matt. 7:13–14). Every person walks one of these roads.

This is not merely a call to make a decision—it is a call to undivided allegiance.

Joshua, at the end of his life, 24:15 “Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve”

The call is immediate—this day. Delayed obedience is disobedience. Half-hearted loyalty is rebellion. There is no neutral ground. To refuse to serve the Lord is to serve His enemy. Scripture knows nothing of spiritual neutrality or lukewarm commitment (cf. Matt. 12:30; Rev. 3:16).

This call does not contradict the sovereignty of God. Scripture clearly teaches that God chose His people before the foundation of the world (Eph. 1:4). Yet God’s sovereign election never cancels human responsibility. The same God who ordains the end also ordains the means. Those whom He chooses, He calls to obedient faith, faithful worship, and covenant loyalty.

Therefore, the call still stands—clear, urgent, and unavoidable.

Choose life. Serve the Lord. Worship the King of heaven with an undivided heart. Come to Jesus, Matthew 11:29-30

He has spoken. Heaven and earth have heard.

Lastly, In what ways does this message move you to, Repent?
Trust Christ more deeply? Walk in thankful obedience?
