Are human souls created directly by God, or are they passed on from parents along with the body?
(Extracts from Francis Turretin, edited into modern English)
Turretin’s answer:
We affirm that souls are immediately created by God.
We deny that souls are propagated from parents.
This view is called Creationism of the soul (not to be confused with views about the age of the earth).
Each human soul is created directly by God.
This happens at the moment God appoints, when the body is formed.
The body comes from parents.
The soul comes from God alone.
The soul is passed down from parents, like physical traits.
This would mean the soul is generated through human reproduction.
Turretin firmly rejects this second view.
The soul is immaterial, spiritual, and simple (not made of parts).
What is material can be divided and reproduced.
What is spiritual cannot be cut, divided, or biologically passed on.
Conclusion:
A
spiritual soul cannot
be produced by physical parents.
Parents can generate a body, but only God can create a spirit.
The Bible consistently says that God forms the spirit of man.
“The LORD… forms the spirit of man within him.” (Zechariah 12:1)
“The dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.” (Ecclesiastes 12:7)
“Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live?” (Hebrews 12:9)
Notice the pattern:
Bodies come from the earth and parents.
Souls come from God.
Conclusion:
God
alone is called the Father
of spirits,
never parents.
Creation of a soul is a true act of creation, not shaping existing matter.
Scripture teaches that creation belongs to God alone.
If parents produced souls:
Humans would share in God’s unique creative power.
This would blur the line between Creator and creature.
Conclusion:
Only
God can create souls because only God creates ex nihilo (from
nothing).
Christ had:
A true human body (from Mary)
A true human soul
Yet:
Christ had no human father
His soul was not derived from Mary
Conclusion:
If
Christ’s human soul was created
directly by God,
the same must be true for all humans.
Turretin exposes several dangers:
Treats the soul as if it were physical
Lowers the dignity of the soul
If souls are passed down, then sinful corruption would be created by God or parents
Scripture teaches God creates all things good, not sinful
Each soul stands directly before God
Each soul is judged individually
This fits better with direct creation than inheritance
A common objection:
“If God creates each soul, does that make God the author of sin?”
Turretin’s answer is careful and important:
God creates the soul good and pure
The soul is united to a fallen body
Corruption comes through union with fallen human nature, not because God creates evil
Just as:
God creates rain, but humans misuse it
God creates life, but humans corrupt it
God
creates the soul without sin
Sin arises from Adam’s fall and
our union with him
The body is propagated from parents.
The soul is immediately created by God.
This best honors:
God’s sovereignty
The spiritual nature of the soul
Biblical teaching
Christology
Human responsibility
God alone creates the human soul; parents generate the body, but the soul comes directly from the Father of spirits.
“Your body came from your parents, but your soul came from God. That is why your life belongs to Him.”
