(Extracts from Francis Turretin, edited into modern English))
By
God’s
dominion,
we mean His absolute
right and authority to rule over all things.
By
God’s
sovereignty,
we mean His actual
exercise of that authority,
governing everything according to His will.
God
does not merely influence the world.
He owns
it,
rules
it,
and directs
it.
“The
LORD has established his throne in the heavens,
and his kingdom
rules over all.” (Psalm 103:19, ESV)
God
is not one ruler among many.
He is the supreme
Lord,
above all creatures, powers, and authorities.
God’s dominion is first grounded in creation.
Because God made all things, He has full rights over all things.
He created the heavens and the earth
He formed every creature
He gave life, breath, and being to all
A
potter has authority over the clay because he made it.
How much
more does God have authority over the world He created out of
nothing?
“The
earth is the LORD’s and the fullness thereof,
the world and
those who dwell therein.” (Psalm 24:1, ESV)
Nothing
exists independently of God.
Therefore, nothing is independent
from His rule.
God’s dominion is absolute, not partial or shared.
This means:
No creature can resist His ultimate will
No event escapes His authority
No power can overthrow His rule
Earthly
kings rule by permission.
God rules by nature.
“He
does according to his will among the host of heaven
and among
the inhabitants of the earth;
and none can stay his hand or say
to him, ‘What have you done?’”
(Daniel 4:35, ESV)
God
does not ask permission from His creatures.
He is accountable to
no one but Himself.
Turretin carefully insists that nothing is outside God’s sovereign government.
This includes:
Nature and history
Nations and rulers
Human decisions
Even events we call “chance”
This
does not
mean
God approves of sin.
But it does mean that even
sinful acts do not escape His control.
“He
works all things according to the counsel of his will.”
(Ephesians
1:11, ESV)
Nothing
happens by accident.
What seems random to us is ordered by God
for wise and holy purposes.
Here Turretin is very careful.
God’s sovereignty does not cancel human responsibility.
God governs all things
Humans still act willingly
Humans are still accountable for their actions
God’s control works through human choices, not against them.
When people sin:
God remains holy
Humans remain guilty
God’s purposes are still fulfilled
“As
for you, you meant evil against me,
but God meant it for good.”
(Genesis 50:20, ESV)
The same event can be:
Wicked in human intention
Righteous in God’s plan
This
mystery does not contradict reason.
It simply exceeds our full
understanding.
God does not rule blindly or cruelly.
His sovereignty is always joined with:
Perfect wisdom
Perfect goodness
Perfect justice
God
never acts without reason.
Even when His purposes are hidden,
they are never random.
“Oh,
the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God!
How
unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!”
(Romans
11:33, ESV)
We
may not see the reason,
but faith trusts the Ruler.
God’s sovereignty is especially clear in salvation.
Salvation:
Begins with God’s grace
Is accomplished by Christ
Is applied by the Spirit
No
one saves himself.
God is not reacting to human will; He is
accomplishing His eternal purpose.
“So
then it depends not on human will or exertion,
but on God, who
has mercy.” (Romans 9:16, ESV)
This
does not make God unjust.
It magnifies His mercy.
If
salvation depended on man, no one would be saved.
Because it
depends on God, sinners have hope.
God’s dominion is not meant to terrify believers, but to comfort them.
Because God reigns:
Evil will not have the final word
Suffering is not meaningless
God’s promises cannot fail
“The LORD reigns; let the earth rejoice.” (Psalm 97:1, ESV)
Nothing
can happen to God’s people apart from His fatherly will.
The
same sovereign God who rules the universe also:
Loves His children
Guards their faith
Works all things for their good
The doctrine of God’s dominion calls for:
Humility
We
are creatures, not rulers.
Reverence
God
is not to be treated lightly.
Trust
His
plans are better than ours.
Obedience
He
is Lord, not advisor.
Worship
Sovereignty
belongs to Him alone.
“To him be glory forever. Amen.” (Romans 11:36, ESV)
God
owns everything because He made everything.
God rules everything
because He is Lord of everything.
Nothing happens outside His
control.
Nothing defeats His purposes.
Nothing limits His
authority.
This
sovereignty does not excuse sin, destroy freedom, or remove
responsibility.
Instead, it reveals a God who is supreme,
wise, just, and good.
To
deny God’s sovereignty is to shrink God.
To embrace it is to
rest in Him.
