Those who deny the Trinity often say, "The word Trinity is not in the Bible." That is true — but the truth the word describes is clearly taught in Scripture.
The word Bible is not in the Bible either, yet the concept is. The word incarnation is not in the Bible, yet the doctrine is undeniable. The Trinity is a summary of what the Bible teaches when all the evidence is taken together.
The Bible Teaches There Is Only One God
Scripture is uncompromisingly monotheistic. Christians do not believe in three gods — any view that suggests this misunderstands the doctrine.
"Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one."
Deuteronomy 6:4
"I am the LORD, and there is no other, besides me there is no God."
Isaiah 45:5
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit Are Each Fully God
The Father Is God
This is rarely disputed.
"Grace to you and peace from God our Father."
Romans 1:7
The Son Is God
The Bible explicitly calls Jesus God and attributes divine works to Him.
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
John 1:1
"My Lord and my God!"
John 20:28
"Our great God and Savior Jesus Christ."
Titus 2:13
Jesus also does what only God can do:
- Creates all things (John 1:3; Colossians 1:16)
- Forgives sins (Mark 2:5–7)
- Receives worship (Matthew 14:33; Hebrews 1:6)
If Jesus is not God, then Scripture promotes idolatry — and that is impossible.
The Holy Spirit Is God, Not a Force
Some claim the Spirit is merely God's power. Scripture says otherwise. When Ananias lied to the Spirit, Peter declared:
"You have not lied to man but to God."
Acts 5:3–4
The Spirit has personal attributes that no impersonal force can possess:
- He speaks (Acts 13:2)
- He teaches (John 14:26)
- He can be grieved (Ephesians 4:30)
- He has a will (1 Corinthians 12:11)
The Three Are Distinct, Yet One
The Father, Son, and Spirit are not the same Person — yet they act together as one God. At Jesus' baptism, all three are simultaneously present and distinct:
This cannot be explained by "one person wearing three masks." (Matthew 3:16–17)
One Name — Three Persons
"Baptizing them in the name [singular] of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."
Matthew 28:19
One name. Three Persons. This is not confusion — this is divine revelation.
The Trinity in Salvation
The work of salvation reveals the unity of the Trinity — each Person plays a distinct, indispensable role.
Chose His people before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1)
Died for His sheep and purchased the church with His blood
Gives new birth and brings sinners to faith in Christ
Salvation is the united work of the triune God.
The Trinity in the Resurrection
All three Persons are involved in Christ's resurrection — a striking confirmation of Trinitarian cooperation.
The Father Raised Jesus
"…God the Father who raised Him from the dead."
Galatians 1:1
The Son Raised Himself
"I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again."
John 10:17–18
The Spirit Raised Jesus
"If the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit."
Romans 8:11
Denying the Trinity Undermines the Gospel
If Jesus is not fully God: His sacrifice cannot bear infinite wrath, He cannot truly reveal the Father, and salvation collapses.
If the Spirit is not God: Regeneration becomes human effort, and the new birth loses its power.
"Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him."
John 5:23
The Trinity Is a Mystery, Not a Contradiction
A contradiction would say: "God is one Person and three Persons in the same way."
The Trinity says: God is one in essence, three in Persons.
Mystery does not mean nonsense. It means God is greater than our finite minds.
"Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God!"
Romans 11:33
Submission, Not Revision
Those who reject the Trinity usually do so not because Scripture is unclear, but because they refuse to accept all of Scripture together. We do not sit above God's Word and edit it — we bow before it and believe it.
"The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us."
Deuteronomy 29:29
The Trinity is revealed. Therefore, it must be believed.
